So, there's this thing called The 100 Day Project. Maybe you've heard of it, maybe not. There are many versions out there but I heard about it from the artist Elle Luna, who threw out this simple idea: pick something, anything, and do it every day for 100 days. That’s it. Paint, dance, write, take photos of weird shadows, whatever pulls at your curiosity.
It’s not about mastery. It's not even about being "good" at something. It’s about showing up, repeatedly, to notice what happens when you give a moment of your day to create.
I got hooked a few years ago, though not always completing my full 100 days. One of my favorite rounds, and one I completed fully, was 100 Days of Local Landscapes in 2024. I took 7x7” paper and painted meadows, trails, rivers, and quiet spaces of the places I could see in a day. Not the epic or grand version of nature far away, but my actual magical, (sometimes dreary and boring), sometimes radiant surroundings. It changed the way I looked at small parks, valleys, and humble southern mountainscapes. I stopped craving distant views and started falling in love with the land right around me.
This year I’ve got a new theme: 100 Days of Wonderness.
Spring Clover In My Yard- Day 17 of 100
Let me pause right there. Yes, wonderness. According to the Oxford Dictionary, it is a word used in the Middle Ages that is now obsolete.
DISAGREE!
To me, wonderness is the feeling of standing in the middle of nowhere and realizing you are somewhere. It’s the quiet art of noticing. It’s when a bee lands on a flower close, and instead of passing it, you lean in. It’s when you walk down a path and bend down to see underneath a fern.
Wonderness is a state of being I want to be in daily, not just in the grand moments but in the everyday that’s so easy to miss when rushing past.
So, for 100 days, I’m chasing wonderness. Some days it might be a sketch of something seen, maybe another of something imagined.
And yes, there are days when I forget or don’t have time. Often I have to play catch up. That’s part of it too.
100 Days of Wonderness Watercolor and Ink
If you’ve ever wanted to start something but feel like you’re too late or not consistent or not creative enough, this project is perfect for that. Just start. Start again. Then start again.
And maybe, somewhere in those days, you’ll find your own kind of wonderness too.
I will be releasing 25 pieces at a time of the Wonderness project for you to own the next four Friday's starting May 2, 2025 at 10 am. You can find them HERE. Each an original piece of art made with watercolor and ink. They will come floating in an open shadow box.
